July 2001. My wife Jan and I left Camp Van Vac for a canoe day trip up the Dead River and into Twin Lakes. Upon entering South Twin Lake, we saw a large raptor in the middle of the lake, in the water, in apparent distress. As we paddled closer, the raptor, a young osprey, began to "swim" towards shore, using its wings as paddles. It was unable to fly.
As we got even closer, we saw the osprey had a set of treble hooks embedded in its legs. Another set of treble hooks was deep in the mouth of a 22-inch northern pike: the osprey and the northern had become one.
